In a riveting read in today’s SMH, playwright Louis Nowra – one
of
Shane
Warne’s biographers – says the spin bowler’s troubled relationship
with
the
country that spawned him has finally collapsed:
“Emotionally Warne is still a teenager. He doesn’t believe
in
delayed
gratification, he is completely egocentric, blames others for
his
mistakes
(even his mother) and adores mixing with sportsmen or
rock-and-rollers
as
famous as he is.
“Because he has never had a real job and exists in a world of
the
cricket
paddock, five-star hotels and exclusive casino gaming rooms, he
is
seldom aware
of another world outside his orbit. When playing badly he
sulks
and seeks ego
massaging from reporters; when he is playing at his best he
is
ebullient and
ignores the press.”
