December 2004, Alan Revell, managing director of John Fairfax Holdings Commercial Division hosts a dinner for his direct reports at swanky Sydney dining room Aria. In his post dinner address he chooses to answer the question all his team are dying to ask: will he be stepping into the shoes of his boss and CEO, Fred Hilmer AO? Unlikely he says but a replacement will be named soon… Could the new CEO be Brian Evans, CEO of Fairfax’s New Zealand opperation, one brave executive asks. Revell’s reply: if it is him I’ll resign! So, with todays announcement that Evans is to be appointed COO of Fairfax what will Revell do? Evans may not be the new CEO but he is Revell’s new boss!
