Despite missing out on an historic fourth consecutive premiership last season, the Brisbane Lions have overtaken the Sydney
Swans to become the AFL’s most popular team, according to the lastest Roy Morgan Sports
Monitor poll. The Lions had an estimated 1.49 million
supporters in 2004 (up 161,000), while Swans remain the second most popular team, finishing 2004 with an estimated
1,335,000 supporters.
They were both well ahead of the most popular Victorian club, Essendon
(809,000 supporters), which placed ahead of Collingwood (776,000
supporters) for the fourth consecutive year – despite the Magpies
experiencing the
highest rise in support of all Victorian teams since 2001, with an
increase of 12.8% over the four year period.
Struggling Melbourne-based clubs, Melbourne, Kangaroos and Western
Bulldogs are the least supported clubs with fewer than 250,000 fans
each.
