Despite the woes at the Nine Network, Kerry Packer must be in a good mood. He was at Nine last Friday for the weekly after work drinks session for the celebration of reporter Peter Harvey’s 30 years with the network, and there are reports that he later dropped a lazy million or four at Star City Casino, which will be good news for Tabcorp.

Curiously the Packer story is not on the News Ltd website this morning. The Tele story says Packer ‘lost’ the money gambling at Star City in Sydney over the past two weekends. There have been infrequent stories about his appearances at Star City in the past year, while most of the stories about his gambling overseas date back over the past decade.

The most notable was when he was banned by MGM from its Las Vegas casino in 1995 after reportedly winning $33 million playing blackjack.

Meanwhile more reports are to hand about how he charmed and mixed easily with staff at the Peter Harvey function at Nine on Friday, when John Howard signed off the video tribute with his own deep “Peter Harvey, Canberra”.

If he was so relaxed at Nine, its no wonder he felt the urge to help Tabcorp with a million or two over the weekend. Tabcorp is locked in a very messy and increasingly expensive brawl over the TV broadcasting rights for Victorian and Sydney races so every little bit helps.

The Fin Review also reports today that Tabcorp is poised to beat PBL in the race to develop a $2 billion casino in Singapore. A $50 million upgrade of Jupiters on the Gold Coast will also keep Tabcorp’s casino division busy – and maybe even attract Big Kerry north of the border for an occasional flutter.
