Agriculture, in the end, is like any other business. Free
individuals putting their own capital at risk will deliver the best
possible outcome, not governments splashing tax dollars.
Look at
New Zealand’s farmers. They have not had a skerrick of government
assistance in 20 years and their major markets are thousands of
kilometres distant – yet they are among the most successful and feared
farming producers on the planet.
There’s no question that we
should help our drought affected producers and communities. But help
them stay on the land? Surely the debate should be about more than just
drought relief.
