South Africa 134 Uruguay 3; New Zealand 91 Fiji 0; Australia 74 Samoa
7. Basketball, you might think? No, rugby union… the much vaunted
“international” code. Clearly there’s something desperately askew in
the other code in the
South Pacific, and, as for Uruguay who knows, or cares?
For years rugby has done very well in most South Pacific nations with
the notable exception of Papua New Guinea, but the parlous state of rugby in two of its proud South Pacific nations –
Fiji and Samoa – opens a small window of opportunity for rugby league to get
its act together, and capitalise on rugby’s problems.
