I readily own up to the fact that I picked just one winner out of seven in the weekend’s NRL premiership round.
I
say “readily” because I am very confident the great majority of
tipsters won’t have done much better. Even the man I regard as the
game’s best judge of form, Warren Ryan, got one out of seven. And which
game did I get right? The Storm’s thrashing of the Rabbitohs! Hardly
something to crow about.
Some weeks ago I commented that the
premiership ladder was no closer than it was at the same stage last
season…but the games were much less predictable. It hasn’t got any
easier since then.
The argument will be advanced that the
topsy-turvy results vindicate the salary cap rules. But the salary cap
is supposed to produce a more “even” competition. It’s true that it’s
about as even as it has been in recent years – it’s just more
unpredictable!
