What’s the future for independent media
in Adelaide? Last week it was The Adelaide Review under discussion – and that’s been around for more than 20 years. Now, The Independent Weekly, a Sunday quality broadsheet launched less than 12 months ago has been reduced to flogging discount subs round private school staff rooms. The prognosis is not good.
What’s going on at SBS? Last week a controversial BAFTA award winning documentary The Power of Nightmares, a BBC series that suggests the threat from al-Qaeda has been largely exaggerated by Western politicians was not screened, despite promotion in papers that day. A repeat showing of Unconstitutional, a program alleging civil rights abuses in the US, was also pulled. The Power of Nightmares has been criticised in the UK since the 7 July bombings and these are sensitive times, but SBS doesn’t normally shy away from hard issues. So what’s happening? SBS’s media release page gives no clues.
