The Bush administration has signalled that the “War on Terror” is
coming to an end, as the four-year slogan is phased out in favour of a
new name which takes into account the changing nature of the battle,
says The New York Times.

A quick scan of the White House‘s
recent press briefings suggests that “ideological struggle” is now a
popular precursor to any mention of the war on terror, and even works
well as a standalone.

The Daily Telegraph
in London says the Pentagon’s wordsmiths are starting to favour the
weighty phrase “the struggle against violent extremism” over the
simple, snappy slogan of old.

Defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld
has also contributed to the naming debate by describing America’s
anti-terrorism efforts as: “The global struggle against the enemies of
freedom, the enemies of civilisation.”

Overall administration
officials are gravitating towards a phrase which emphasises
“diplomatic,” “economic” and “political” solutions, rather than a
“military” one.
