There are times when NRL club Chief Executives make
sense, and there are times when they talk complete nonsense. And yesterday’s comments by the Broncos CEO, Bruno Cullen,
are not only nonsense but they encourage the view among many non-Broncos fans that
the club is too big for its boots and enjoys a “privileged position” because it
has a generous majority shareholder – News Limited – and is the lone team in a
city that ought to be able to support at least two, but will probably never be
allowed to.
Cullen has downplayed the importance of winning the
“minor premiership” which carries with it the JJ Giltinan Shield and a $100,000
payment from the NRL. One of his comments struck me – “I don’t want to devalue
the minor premiership because certainly it’s an honour. But not many people
remember the minor premiers.”
Well, I am far from certain that observation is
accurate, and I know for a fact that more than one struggling club in the NRL
would welcome the injection of $100,000 into its bank account.
Well I have some news for Bruno Cullen. The minor
premiership is more important than ever this year, because if the Broncos think
preparing for the finals means the final two games don’t matter they might get a
real shock.
