Stephen Mayne writes:
Ron Walker as Fairfax chairman is
just too much to take. With Rupert having rejected my nomination for
the News Corp board, there’s some space in the campaign diary for
another media company tilt, so it may as well be Fairfax.
Big
Red is up for re-election this year so, as someone who has bankrolled
election campaigns for years, let’s give the man himself a contest for
a change. I’m already a small Fairfax shareholder, but need to be
nominated by another shareholder to run. So anyone out there prepared
to sign a letter and send it off should email smayne@crikey.com.au.
Time
is tight because Australian companies require nominations to land 35
business days before the AGM and the Fairfax meeting is usually towards
the end of October, meaning there are only 40-odd days to go.
They
could, of course, sneakily bring the AGM forward to earlier than
previous years, but an honorable outfit like Fairfax wouldn’t go out of
its way to avoid some corporate democracy, would it?
