Brendan Nelson might want to send a copy of his ‘Values for Australian
Schooling’ to that bastion of Catholic Establishment and Jesuit
Education, Melbourne’s Xavier College where this week a student who was
the victim of bullying (including having a bullet and death threat sent
to him) was forced to leave the school. The school advised the parents
of the victim that the school “had advice” that if they expelled the
bully, who had admitted to the bullying, the school would be subject to
a challenge from the parents.
All the great words in policy documents and diaries about “bullying and
harassment will not be tolerated” are worth nothing if when it comes to
the crunch schools are too shit scared to action. They talk the talk
but they can’t walk the walk.
A spokesman for Xavier College…
Two Year 11 students
whilst very strong circumstansital evidence pointed to the alleged
bully it wasn’t rock solid and the school received legal advice was
that they could face a challenge if he was expelled. As a result he has
been suspended for a “fairly lengthy” period. If there was he wouldn’t
have been allowed to stay at the school
As a result the parents of the other student decided to take him out of the school – school was disappointed.
“no one was asked to leave the school”
