Dave Penberthy, tyro editor of the attack-dog Daily Tele, went
in hard against John Brogden over his remark that Helena Carr was a
“mail order bride.” But if this account by a Crikey subscriber is
accurate, Pembo sometimes has trouble deciding what’s funny and what’s
just plain tasteless:
In 2000 Penbo was working in the Tele’s Macquarie
street offices when Labor MP Greg Wilton committed suicide. After a few
days passed Penbo started to phone up journo mates, telling them that
someone had contacted him wanting to get in touch and passing on a
mobile number. The unsuspecting journos would call the number, only to reach the mobile phone message bank of… Greg Wilton.
