SBS
is making a habit of trumping the ABC lately, and it’s upped the ante
even further after winning the rights to show Martin Scorsese’s
landmark Bob Dylan documentary No Direction Home in November.
SBS will screen the almost four hour documentary, which the BBC has
described as “the most important rock documentary of the last 20
years,” over two weeks on the 8th and 15th of November.

But
for those who can’t wait, today sees the release of this priceless
glimpse into the earliest Dylan cannon on DVD, which features
additional songs and footage not seen on the historic American PBS-BBC
TV offering. And judging by the critical and popular reaction from
Dylan’s two biggest markets – the US and Britain – it should sell like
hotcakes.

No Direction Home reminds us just how profound Dylan’s influence on the evolution of popular music has been, with his eponymous Like A Rolling Stone now widely considered the greatest single song in pop culture.

While not glossing over its historical avoidance of some Dylan speed humps and even the project’s overt commercialism, Slate
offers an exceptional article ‘The Last Temptation of Dylan’ by David
Yaffe, which can also be downloaded as a Podcast. But the BBC has the mother of all websites, including preview clips and a plethora of interviews and articles that just shows why No Direction Home is indeed a landmark for all fans of popular music.
