Malcolm Mackerras, visiting fellow in political science at the Australian Defence Force:
To the question “Can a Muslim get elected to parliament in Australia?” the answer is “Yes.”
There is only one Muslim in any house of any Australian Parliament today. Yet the fact that there is one indicates it is possible for a Muslim to get elected. All you need is the right party endorsement and the right overall climate for your party.
Our sole Muslim MP is Adem Somyurek (Labor) who was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council for Eumemmerring Province at the November 2002 general election.
