As the first case of avian flu was reported in a European Union
country, experts are warning that the real cause for concern lies where
the disease originated, in South East Asia and China… the concern in Europe should not disguise the need to deal with the source of the threat in Vietnam and China.

In
March last year, China reported that it had stamped out the flu. But
there was no confirmation that the authorities have mastered subsequent
outbreaks in Qinghai Province and the Xinjiang Region, in the northwest
of the country. Now, reports speak of 2,600 birds dying of the H5N1
strain in Inner Mongolia, indicating that the disease has spread
greatly. Again, official Chinese media say the situation is under
control.

But sources doubt this, and are concerned that migratory birds may be affected, which could spread the flu abroad.
