The cost cutting axe is poised
to start swinging at the Nine Network’s Melbourne newsroom. The cuts
are expected to start today, with up to a dozen positions likely to
be chopped.

They include reporters and presenters. As well,
producers and technical staff are on the list and Crikey has been given
the names of five people who newsroom staff believe are the prime
candidates. But the most tantalising rumour around Nine is that Bob
Penfold, the veteran LA bureau chief for Nine, might be returning to
Australia to run Melbourne.

Where that would leave current boss Michael Venus, if it happens, is a bit problematic.
