If you’re even mildly concerned about the proposed shoot-to-kill provisions in Australia’s new anti-terror legislation, you should read this story in today’s UK Independent.
In the past 12 years, the paper reports, 30 people have been shot dead
by British police marksmen – but not one police officer has been
successfully prosecuted.
It’s an issue that’s been at the
forefront of the British consciousness since Brazilian Jean Charles de
Menezes was shot dead at Stockwell Underground station in London on 22
July, at a time when the 7 July bombings, and the 21 July attempted
bombings, were still very fresh in Londoners’ minds.
Marksmen wrongly suspected de Menezes was a suicide bomber and police later took full responsibility for the mistake.
