Will Rupert Murdoch sack the editor of his biggest-selling newspaper? Rebekah Wade, editor of the London Sun, who’s well-known in Britain for running a campaign against domestic violence, has been apprehended by police for assaulting her husband. As The Guardian reports, Wade was released from custody around lunchtime yesterday after leaving her husband, EastEnders actor and traditional tough-guy Ross Kemp, with a cut lip.
It’s understood the altercation took place after Wade and Kemp attended a cocktail party hosted by London PR guru Matthew Freud and his wife, Elisabeth Murdoch, as well as a dinner with recently-resigned MP David Blunkett. Today’s Australian reports that police were called to the Battersea apartment of Wade, 37 and Kemp, 41, around 4am local time.
And according to The Guardian, Wade made a “low-key” return to the Sun’s offices yesterday, claiming that Rupert Murdoch is treating the issue “lightly.” Wade made history when in 2003 she became the first female editor of The Sun, reports The Independent, and built her tabloid pedigree while at the News of the World from 1998, where she oversaw its controversial “naming and shaming” of convicted paedophiles.
The Guardian reports that Wade’s position is “secure for now.”
