This week we’ve seen the Senate’s report on IR, next week we’ll see what the Senators say on sedition when the Legal and Constitutional Committee reports on the terror bills.
There’s some talk that it could go altogether – that the Government’s gruesome twosome of George Brandis and Brett Mason, the bar’s band of brothers, say sedition is silly.
Of course, they may well wait to give that nice Attorney-General, Mr Ruddock, and his boss the opportunity of making the announcement.
Even if this is too much to hope for, it’s understood that the Senators have at least remembered that democracy depends on checks and balances – particularly when issues such as preventive detention and control orders are being discussed – and intend to give the Attorney and the PM a gentle nudge to the ribs.
