While Australia’s quality newspaper publisher Fairfax has had its fair share of retrenchment woes,
it should take heart – it’s not the only newspaper company that has
been feeling the pinch and doling out redundancies in the last month.

  • The Chicago Tribune has cut 28 newsroom jobs. “In recent years and months virtually every major paper in the nation has undergone layoffs, some of them repeatedly,” says Tribune editor Ann Marie Lipinski.
  • Long Island’s Newsday is dismissing 72 employees from across the newspaper and says that 40 additional vacant jobs will be eliminated.
  • TheBaltimore Sun has announced that 70 employees
    will leave the newspaper in a company-wide voluntary buyout program,
    eliminating its London and Beijing bureaus and leaving it with just
    three full-time foreign correspondents.
  • 85 people will go at The Los Angeles Times, 8% of newsroom staff.
  • Trinity Mirror – the UK’s largest newspaper publisher – is
    expected to remove between 5 and 7% of its 11,000-strong workforce,
    between 550 and 750 job cuts across the group.
  • Media reports indicate that at least 34 editorial employees have applied for a redundancy deal at TheBoston Globe.
