David Flint writes:
The real story about Robert Gerard
is not the media feeding frenzy, which was no “barbecue stopper” out in
mainstream Australia. It was that someone directed The Fin to material already on the public
record at the time of his appointment.
So who did The Fin’s dirty work? And why try
to damage the Treasurer? We can
eliminate, for very good reason, journalists, the opposition, the crossbench,
the prime minister and the cabinet. So, who is
left?
This had nothing to do with
confidential information – Peter Costello is under attack precisely because the
facts were out in the open – so The Fin can hardly rely on the code of ethics to
protect a source. The Fin has to come clean. That’s
the real story.
