Greenpeace has refuted accusations its Arctic Sunrise ship deliberately
rammed a Japanese whaling vessel, the Nisshin Maru, in the Southern
Ocean, according to media reports today like this one.
Japan’s Fisheries Agency says video evidence shows a Greenpeace ship
could have avoided the collision but instead deliberately turned into
the path of the Nisshin Maru. Greenpeace, however, say that under
international maritime law, their vessel the Arctic Sunrise had right
of way.
We now know about which media are actually on the scene, thanks to the
dispatch from the Antarctic Ocean in yesterday’s Crikey. But questions
about the reporting still remain. Online Opinion’s Graham Young tackles the topic today – why it matters that Greenpeace lied and the press doesn’t seem to care.
