ACT Labor Senator Kate Lundy is
threatening to “name and shame” the Canberra
restaurants at the centre of claims of exploiting Filipino workers, the ABC
reported at the weekend.
The Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers
Union claims some temporary workers are being treated like slaves and are being
threatened with deportation by their employers if they stand up for their
rights.
The union’s David Bibo has
already singled out favourite political watering hole, The Holy Grail, as one
of the offending
prominent restaurants.
Now Lundy has
said “I’m prepared to identify these restaurants that aren’t doing the right
thing, that are exploiting these workers, in the Federal Parliament, in the
hope to put pressure on them to pay the money owing, and clean up their health
and safety standards.”
Not all locals are impressed. Discussion is already
underway at The RiotACT site.
