Temper,
temper. US baseballer Delmon Young, a 20-year-old
prospect with the Tampa Bay Red Devils, has just been suspended for 50 games
for throwing a bat that hit a replacement umpire. The ban, believed to be the
longest in the league’s 123-year history, is a major blow for the young player,
who was the number one draft pick in the 2003 draft and 2005’s minor league
player of the year.The incident
happened after Young struck out in the first innings. As USA Today reported:
“He lingered in the batter’s box, walked away and then threw his bat end over
end at the umpire, hitting him in the chest.” Young will also perform 50 hours
of community service. The umpire was uninjured.

McEwen
wins stage four. It might have taken him four hours,38 minutes, and 51 seconds, but Robbie
McEwen has won stage four of this year’s Giro d’Italia, his second stage win
for the event. Like his win in stage two, McEwen edged his wheel across the
line ahead of a pack of fast-finishing rivals which included Alberto Loddo and Olympic champion Paolo Bettini. Despite
the two stage wins, he’s in 71st position, 95 seconds behind overall leader
Stefan Schumacher. Fellow Aussie Brad McGee is in seventh place overall, 31
seconds behind Schumacher.

Ashes
could be the end for Langer. Ever since the last
Ashes series there have been questions floating around about when Justin Langer
would call it a day. That speculation was intensified following his poor form
and a serious head injury on the recent tour of South Africa. Now Langer himself
has put the prospect of his retirement firmly on the agenda. “I can’t say what the future holds beyond the Ashes,” he
told the SMH, hinting that if Australia wins the Ashes back, he would consider
ending his career. “The last Ashes series really hurt. I would love to
leave the game knowing that we had regained the Ashes and the next Ashes team
would have it in their possession.”
