Our Australian story should fill our hearts with pride and our eyes
with tears. It is a story of the dispossessed and the outcast / God’s
own garden / expounded by many who are far more eloquent and
knowledgeable than I /

depressing features of modern Australia / bounded by water on three
sides / is the low esteem in which governments and politicians are
generally held /

Australia and Australians / I do not profess
for a moment that I now know all the problems / I find it rather
incredible that a country which has been given so many opportunities /
should imagine that it is a very limited number of people in the
community who are going to be hurt and damaged / My deep conviction /
is / we need governments which believe in / the end of history /

ideals / there is no limit to what Australia can / refute / achieve /
Modern Australia is rightly concerned / We have so much / doubt with

Almost everything we have we owe to someone else /

/ the divisions which are emerging in our society /

Perhaps we politicians have mostly ourselves to blame /

Soviet model / Governments which meddle / badly / stick to their
traditional job / badly / Governments which believe in / the dictates /

Australians / people are questioning their God, their country and even
/ wealth generators / Nothing is safe / Nothing is safe / Nothing is
safe / I hope I can be a similar goad / People must be inspired to
believe / We need governments which believe in / people who believe /
We need governments which believe in / the corrosive cynicism of modern
times / This is a classic case / defeat is final / unhappiness
permanent / evil invincible /

Our challenge is to answer / the sound and the fury /

as / a matter of logical argument / one can be persuaded to believe /

People who believe / defeat is final / unhappiness permanent / evil invincible /

and Australians / unemployment, crime, family breakdown and social
disintegration / are / the new opportunities / We need governments
which believe in / the greater complexity of modern life / higher
expectations / and social alienation against greater individual rights
/ We need governments which believe in / seeking solutions to all the
difficulties / the real antidote to / hope / fear / immigration / We
need governments which believe in / a balanced appreciation of our true
position /

strange affliction / a means for applying band-aids / to bring peace /
like a householder who keeps fixing walls and mending floors / stifled
individual liberty and impoverished a nation /
