Snowy Hydro workers were told not to attend the various rallies
against the sale being held in the Snowy Mountains – their families
included. An ETU representative within Snowy Hydro says the unions have
been told to keep quiet about the sale and each worker will get $1000
worth of shares if the privatisation goes ahead. However the unions are
looking like opposing the sale at the state Labor conference in a
fortnight’s time. Steve Whan, Monaro MP, says he’ll be kicked out of
the ALP if he issues a private member’s bill opposing the sale.
A company called Defence Maritime Services, now owned by Dubai
Ports, is in high level talks with the NSW Government and Sydney Ferries Corp
(carved out of the State Transit Authority by Michael Costa in 2004)
about taking over the management of its fleet. The broad and blunt plan
is to sack all union staff and put the entire operation on Workplace
Agreements.
