Their boss, Luke Duffy, who pleaded guilty to three charges of
dishonesty, was sentenced to 29 months’ jail last year. Initially
detained at Loddon Prison in Castlemaine, Duffy is serving the rest
of his sentence in home detention.

can work the hard men and women of the NSW prison system when there’s a
big scroop to be had. He’s produced cracking prison yarns before.
Remember the tail of a New Year’s Eve party at Long Bay prison thrown
by Phuong Ngo, the Fairfax councillor serving time for the murder of
former NSW Labor MP John Newman. That caused plenty of embarrassment
given that some Labor Party councillors from Fairfield turned up.

Kirkconnell Correctional Centre is a minimum security Australian male prison located 30km east of Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia. It is located in the Sunny Corner State Forest and

production, afforestation, welding and gardening. Kirkconnell inmates
also carry out all outside ground maintenance at the maximum security
Lithgow Correctional Centre. Has a fully trained bushfire fighting team comprising both prison staff and inmates.
Adult Education Courses: welding; hand and power tool use;
forklift driving; literacy and numeracy; small business management;
leadlighting and Aboriginal painting.
Community interaction: Inmates take part in the annual Clean Up Australia Day and participate regularly in various community projects.

Loddon Prison
Famous inmate: Alan Bond, Luke Duffy (nab) (now in home detention)…

Location: Castlemaine, Victoria
Philosophy: Emphasis on drug-free lifestyles, and provides support for HIV-positive
and intellectually impaired prisoners undergoing release preparation.

Accommodation: Cottage-style self-contained
units as well as medium security single cell accommodation in
larger units for up to 399 prisoners. Cells contain a toilet, shower, hand basin, bed, desk, chair,
shelving, bed light, notice board, mirror, floor carpet, window,
curtains, television, heating and intercom.

    To recognise the contributions that community work partnerships conducted in-house can make to the community.
    Winner: Loddon Prison and Campbells Creek Senior Citizens Club:This
    community-based initiative involves local community clubs and prisoners
    at Loddon Prison. Around 100 local senior citizens are invited each
    year to a Christmas lunch prepared by prisoners and staff at Loddon
    Prison. The elderly parents and grandparents of prison staff are also
    invited. The prison provides a piano and a community sing-a-long is led
    by one of the senior citizens. There are also Koori art displays. This
    activity helps to break down negative feelings and community prejudice
    towards the prison.

    John Morony correctional centre

    Status: low-risk facility
    Visitor information: Visitors are not permitted to take food into the Complex. Food may be
    purchased from a canteen in either of the centres. Barbecue facilities
    are also available. Coins for use in drink vending machines and money
    for canteen purchases are permitted to be taken into the centres.

    Location:     Windsor,
    60km from Sydney’s CBD.

    Population:     550 inmates
    Inmate industries: Metal work,
    bumper bar repairs and powder coating. Work is available in a wire
    products workshop which produces goods for private industry. Employment is also available in internal and external grounds
    maintenance, wildlife care, building maintenance, clerical work and
    full-time education. All inmates, other than those excluded by illness
    or disability, are expected to work.

    Media opportunities: The Moroney soccer team appeared on SBS’s Nerds FC. In a physical match against Nerds FC, they beat the bespectacled ones 6-0.

    Those who have gone before them include some high-profile
    business figures. Former Coles Myer boss Brian Quinn, tycoon Alan
    Bond, former FAI operative Rodney Adler and his former associate
    Brad Cooper have all, at one stage, traded designer suits for
    prison uniforms. Disgraced Enron executive chairman Ken Lay was
    facing possible life in jail after he was convicted over one of the
    worst corporate collapses in US history. He died of a heart attack
    on Wednesday.

    On paper, Loddon Prison in Castlemaine does not sound too
    harrowing. The medium-security jail helps prepare prisoners for
    release, promotes drug-free lifestyles, and offers support for
    HIV-positive inmates and offenders with intellectual
    disabilities.

    Prisoners live in cottage-style accommodation. The
    self-contained units sleep up to four people and boast fully
    equipped kitchens, laundries and living rooms. The units are
    designed to resemble accommodation in the outside world.

    The jail also has medium-security, single-cell accommodation.
    Each cell contains a toilet, shower, basin, bed, desk, chair,
    shelving, bed light, notice board, mirror, floor carpet, window,
    curtains, TV, heating and an intercom. Prisoners can use walking
    and jogging trails
