In the same year that the Howard government commandeered control of both houses of parliament (cue evil snigger growing to evil laughter), the Most Notable Legislation of 2006 award goes to two private members bills that actually made it through parliament: the legislation making the abortion drug RU486 available in Australia, and the legislation allowing medical research on stem cells. Conscience votes! Politicians not bowing to party machines! Applause! Rousing cheers! Backslapping!
2005 Winner: The VSU bill for “proving to us that these days, anything’s possible”.
