With the Crikey Morgan poll showing John Howard in danger of losing his seat of Bennelong, perhaps the Prime Minister should study the reference on his own web site to Stanley Melbourne Bruce. There he will find a reference to Bruce’s government fostering “the increasing power of the federal government over the states” and in 1929 trying to dismantle the Commonwealth Arbitration Court. At the election following this unpopular initiative, says the Prime Ministerial website, the government was defeated and Bruce became the only Australian prime minister to lose his own seat at an election.
Will history come back to haunt Howard?
Will Howard lose Bennelong? There is a precedent.
