The Burmese military junta recently moved the capital from Yangon/Rangoon to a new site deep in the interior of the country known as Naypyidaw. The junta has given a myriad of reasons for this move, however, according to some well-placed people I spoke to, the real reason is that they have discovered a great deal of uranium in the area. A foreign company had supposedly found the uranium and was planning to or had sought to remove quantities without the junta’s knowledge, however, they were discovered and sent packing. Furthermore, I was told that the recent Russia/China veto on a UN motion put forward relating to Burma/Myanmar was motivated by their desire to have access to uranium and that a number of Burmese students are now studying nuclear science in Moscow.
