4.5: the percentage pay rise earned by IT workers over the past year. Health IT workers scored the lowest with a 3.3 per cent rise.

5.8: the percentage pay rise earned by employees of the insurance sector over the past year, by contrast.

8.25: the interest rate announced by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand yesterday. It is the fourth consecutive rise this year.

73: the percentage rise in quarterly profit on Apple Macs and iPods.

45: the number of years the nation’s home ownership rate has remained at 70 per cent for.

3: the number of times a New Zealand police dog was stabbed by a man fleeing from a stolen car.

120: the number of days of hearings since 2005 that the Seven network in a case against its competitors for alleged anti-competitive practices resulting in the end of its pay-TV sports station, C7.

200 million: the estimated cost to the Seven Network for the court case against PBL, News Ltd, Telstra and 17 other parties. The case was rejected by the judge.

68: The age that Prime Minister John Howard turned this week. His celebrated his birthday with Australian troops in East Timor.

8: The number of years that Steve Bracks acted as Premier of Victoria. Bracks retired from politics this morning. He was officially elected leader of the Victorian ALP on March 22, 1999, and, eight months later, he became Premier of Victoria.
