You are what you eat? Do voters who like to have traditional meals at home live in National Party territory where they like their beef? That’s what Crikey has set out to analyse today in our demographic snapshot of Australia.

We’re drilling down into data from Roy Morgan Research to see if there’s any correlation between food habits and voting intention. A man’s way to his heart is through his stomach, after all.

Our Roy Morgan Top 25 finds that residents of regional seats like traditional tucker at home, along with people in blue collar burbs. They like organic food best in Sydney’s inner west, across the CBD in Turnbull territory and up on the NSW north coast. Cossie’s electors are a cosmopolitan lot – or have wide-ranging palates, anyway. They’re most likely to agree with the proposition “I like food from all over the world.”

And where do you find voters who say that their pets are fussy eaters? That’s harder to draw any conclusions from. They live in Wakefield in South Australia – a seat that takes in both the wineries and restaurants of the Clare Valley and the public housing homes of ten pound Poms in Adelaide’s north, in Sydney’s Hillsong territory and, in Victoria, the electorates that return Sophie Mirabella and Julia Gillard. Hmm…

Crikey’s key seats – the 49 seats we believe will decide the federal election — are marked with an asterisk.

More details are available from Electorate Profiles on the Roy Morgan Online Store.
