The Australian way:
In 1956 runners bore the Olympic flame across Australia, on a path from Cairns to Melbourne, where the summer games were to be held. But before the flame even got as far as Sydney, it had to endure a series of setbacks. Torrential rains soaked it. Burning heat almost overwhelmed the runners. The flame even went out a few times. Then in Sydney it encountered a situation unique in Olympic history.
Cross-country champion Harry Dillon was scheduled to bear the flame into Sydney, where he would present it to the mayor, Pat Hills. After making a short speech, Hills would pass the flame along to another runner, Bert Button.
Thirty-thousand people lined the streets of Sydney waiting for Dillon to arrive. Reporters stood ready with their cameras to record the historic occasion. Finally the runner appeared, bearing the flame aloft, and everyone began cheering. As the crowd pressed forward a police escort surrounded the runner in order to keep order.
With this escort around him, the runner made his way through the streets all the way to the Sydney Town Hall. He bounded up the steps and handed the torch to the waiting mayor who graciously accepted it and turned to begin his prepared speech.
Then someone whispered in the mayor’s ear, “That’s not the torch.” Suddenly the mayor realized what he was holding. Held proudly in his hand was not the majestic Olympic flame. Instead he was gripping a wooden chair leg topped by a plum pudding can inside of which a pair of kerosene-soaked underpants was burning with a greasy flame. The mayor looked around for the runner, but the man had already disappeared, melting away into the surrounding crowd.
The 1956 underpants hoax runner, Barry Larkin, was protesting at the Nazi origins of the torch relay. The Olympic movement has widened its sponsor pool since then. Our thanks to Hoaxipedia.
can someone give Tom McLaughlin something to do? Basketweaving or whatever? The man clearly has too much time on his hands
Such a profound scene selection and framing. She really knew how to crank the Hitler propaganda machine. Mr Kilgour would probably agree with the comparison with Nazism (systematised murder for organs, Darfur, Tibet etc). As for the sad red herrings below, the Olympics has stopped being about sport for at least 3 decades now. It’s all about $. Got that? Or are you in denial? Anyone in Sydney in 2000 with half a brain could hardly avoid it. This Olympics is about China Inc too. Athletes are beautiful entertainers with winners 95% from the richest countries, richest support. Frankly it’s a giant multinational coporate junket and marketing opportunity. The young athletes have virtually no moral authority (it’s all ambition) and precious little worldly wisdom. By the way Pat Hills … was ALP Mayor and State MP back then, just like Clover Moore today. (Had to play him in a stunt in 2004 on Town Hall steps.) Do as I say not as I do is the ALP way.
For all the wee hypocrites – during 1956 we still had the white Australia policy running, were stealing aboriginal children from their parents and running an apartheid system.
In 2000 we had hundreds of small brown children locked in concentration camps in the desert being tear gassed and water cannoned.
After Hitler’s olympics we decided not to accept jewish refugees because we didn’t have a racial problem and didn’t want to import one.
The olympics is about the sport, or we would have been black banned.
Au contraire, not enough time by half slapping the big media/politik institutions around, and monitoring the 24 news cycle as best I can. I have my community media vocation on my own micro news blog. It was my image of 2 rings binders of clippings of Olympics Inc 2000 “lies, bribes, drugs & arrogance” in Sydney which effectively gave the Big Media the ‘permission’ to go hard on free speech re Beijing. And go hard they have showing Beijing how Big Media did it in Sydney like that guy Jennings on the Fraud of the Rings. I’m a community media practitioner with real politik successful experience. As long as Crikey.com.au give me space here with 1000 characters I will have my contribution. I leave it in their hands. By the by, now the Big Media are returning to type supporting the corporate media investment in the Olympic Inc over the so called “violent” Free Tibet protesters for simply jostling the bogus (Nazi Beijing) torch parade. Shaky cameras. Water bombs. How shallow.
