As one would expect them to be, virtually all of the prime-time speeches at the Democratic Convention have been — from a rhetorical perspective — very well-crafted and well-delivered. Bill Clinton’s speech, in particular, deserves all the plaudits it is receiving, both in terms of content and delivery. But as competent, well-executed and even dramatic as the Convention has been, at least as striking is what has been missing.
First, there is almost no mention of, let alone focus on, the sheer radicalism and extremism of the last eight years. During that time, our Government has systematically tortured people using sadistic techniques ordered by the White House; illegally and secretly spied on its own citizens; broken more laws than can be counted based on the twisted theory that the President has that power; asserted the authority to arrest and detain even U.S. citizens on U.S. soil and hold them for years without charges; abolished habeas corpus; created secret prisons in Eastern Europe and a black hole of lawlessness in Guantanamo; and explicitly abandoned and destroyed virtually every political value the U.S. has long claimed to embrace.

Well Zane, that was a well thought out intelligent response! Thank you for that.
Mr Glenn Greenwald! Do you not realise that the Western World is at WAR with the Eastern World; we are in the midst of WW111. This altercation started some time ago. The people held in Guantanamo should have been designated “Prisoners of War”. David Hicks from Australia was captured during a fire fight. The man was with the enemy of the Coalition Forces. He left Australia after the attacks on the Twin Towers in New York. He sought out the insurgents camps with the intention of joining them. Misguided, he may have been, he nevertheless acted with free will. It is my opinion that he was lucky not to have been shot as a spy. During the previous world wars a person caught up in such a situation would most likely have been executed in the field or at best held as a prisoner of war. As for the Canadian citizen Maher Arar, I ask why if after immigrating to Canada to seek a better life and escape from military service in Syria did he even know Abdullah Almalki to list him as his “emergency contact” with his landlord? Why continue to hold dual citizenship with Syria? We live in a country where you are innocent till proven guilty. Which is wonderful if you are innocent, and extremely wonderful and generous for those who maybe not so innocent! Label me a conspiracy theorist, but didn’t the Japanese have lots of “tourists” all over the US just prior to WW11. We the Western World is at WAR! We are under assault from a different enemy yes! Nevertheless, we are at WAR! This WAR may stem from a 3,000 year old sibling rivalry, but how it started is beside the point, it is WAR. They the enemy within intends to win. I shudder at this thought but I see no other explanation for this behaviour. Maybe you Mr Greenwald should do a little research, history would be a good subject, theology even better! Be objective, open your closed utopian hankering mind to the possibility. Not all is well with the Western World’s propensity to see only the good in others. Wishing, does not make it so!
Amy Brunner, what a load of unadulterated crap. Keep taking the pills.
