The collaborative relationship between the opposing candidates is off to a very shaky start. Both have stated they want to work together in response to the US financial crisis, but as The Nation reports, it has already been tainted by attempts to acquire political advantage.
Reporting for The Nation, John Nichols examines John McCain’s latest ploy to gain advantage over Barack Obama:
“Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama initiated the sequence of events that led to Republican candidate John McCain’s stunning announcement this afternoon that he would suspend his campaign and propose delaying Friday’s first debate between the contenders.
While it was Obama who took the lead, McCain pulled a bait and switch stunt in order to try and grab headlines — and the leadership mantle in a race that is all about who can best guide the country — for himself.”

After watching Palin’s uninspiring interview with CBS’ Katie Couric last night, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the goal of McCain’s stunt is to have his Presidential debate rescheduled for the time assigned to the Veep debate (and the Veep debate canned). Palin exhibited a superficial level of understand to the questions posed by Couric which rarely moved beyond the bullet-point responses her handlers have had her memorize over the preceding weeks.
Paul, a repost of an earlier post of mine that is relevant to your speculation:
A new development in the debate delay gambit. McCain wants to postpone Palin’s day in front of the headlights. See CNN story:

Will any American political party ever choose a presidential candidate this old again?
Couric got off the Palin bus and on the Biden bus. At least Joe has a wealth of experience in women’s rights which is why the National Organisation of Women have put their backing behind Obama/Biden.
It’s quite hysterical the way Palin flamed and burnt within 2 weeks though isn’t it when the pundits predicted Obama would do just that but he is now stronger than ever before.
It’s pretty funny reading some comments in the US from people who only bother to listen to “their” ole’ boy when they claim that the president of Harvard law review, Harvard justice of laws, constitutional law lecturer, 8 years in Illinois congress and 4 years in Federal congress has way less experience than Palin who got a degree in journalism in 6 years spread over 5 colleges and was mayor of small town nowhere.
Many of them are afronted when you point out the obvious flaws in their argument.
McCain’s only education was to finish 894th in a flight school of 899, marry a rich woman and be a POW 40 years ago.
Having just read “Tiger Forces”, McMoron should be grateful he was taken by the VC because his own mob just murdered anyone they encountered.
