The first Morgan poll taken after the elevation of Malcolm Turnbull to the Liberal leadership has shown no bounce for the Coalition, with the Government increasing its 2PP lead back out to 57-43, up from 55.5-44.5 in the dying days of Brendan Nelson’s leadership, although the sample size for this special Morgan poll was smaller than usual.
However, Turnbull has immediately lifted Nelson’s preferred PM rating, pulling 8 pts off Rudd to reduce the preferred PM difference to a mere 55-30. Turnbull has also bumped up Nelson’s satisfaction rating 5% to 43%, with Rudd more or less steady.
Intriguingly, Turnbull continues to struggle with younger voters, who back Rudd far more strongly than older voters.
Turnbull’s 2PP lead or nudge on Nelson…is just that. It has nothing to do with the Liberals and their policies soaring to popularity but the relief the party faithful now feels with Brendan’s removal from his temporary watch and misery. If ordinary working Australians felt uneasy, even mortified at the sobbing Doctor slouched over the dispatch box…can you imagine the heartache his colleagues and other conservatives endured when they tuned in to every parliamentary sitting. Turnbull’s tough unemotional rhetoric is salve for those who believe the big stick is the solution to Aussies at their lowest ebb.
The Australians Shanahan will be beside himself, ‘yet another honymoon is over, yay I say to ye the new Messiah is among us, hail our redemption from the evils of the poor and middle class’s top gun Kevin of the Labor rulers, hark our time is near, all praise marijana Mal, for we will be delivered back to our rightful positions as rich, non tax paying biggies of business and land. Mal of the money, Mal of the ( I had it bad but now I got it good) smile.’ Well this will be worth waiting for, Shanahan reading polls only he can see the results of.Incidently notice we go from the Costello smirk to the Turnbull half smile. Not a full beam just a half you dont know what Im thinking sly sorta grin. Fits perfectly.
