To: i.kev@lowbottom.vic.edu.auDear Imre,
It was great to catch up at regional office. Your pitch for the new language centre was well-received although we did wonder whether Ukrainian would attract the student numbers in your projections.
On the difficult question of school expulsions, we have had directives from the Minister that all such cases be referred to head office. Student retention is a high priority for the government and it is suggested that all schools adapt their pedagogical strategies accordingly.
With regard to student Imperatore, then, I have to advise you that the behaviour detailed in your file is insufficient under the new regulations to warrant expulsion.
I look forward to your next visit to regional office.
Cheers,
Melanie
Assistant Regional Director

To: Melanie Newbold (m.newbold@regionaloffice.vic.edu.au)Dear Melanie,
Thank you for your email. With reference to the new regulations, is the Minister fully apprised of all the details relating to student Imperatore? We feel that arson is warrantable grounds for expelling a student from the school body. If, to speak hypothetically, the Minister’s house were razed to the ground, she would naturally anticipate that the justice system deal with the culprit appropriately. We feel that our “pedagogical strategies” have nothing to do with student Imperatore’s nature.

To: i.kev@lowbottom.vic.edu.auDear Principal Kevorkian,
The regulations are quite clear. Students are to be encouraged to remain at school until the end of Year 12. We wish to point out that the fire as such was minor and that the Department will be making repairs in the fullness of time.
Faithfully yours
M. Newbold

To: Melanie Newbold (m.newbold@regionaloffice.vic.edu.au)Dear Ms. Newbold,
Am I to assume that it would take a Columbine-type situation for the Department to consider removing a student?

Dear Principal Kevorkian,
We reiterate the principles expressed in previous correspondence. The Assistant Regional Director would point out that in matters of expulsion the Department is across the issue.

To: Melanie Newbold (m.newbold@regionaloffice.vic.edu.au)Dear Regional Director (Ass),
You are going to have to get your lackeys to use comprehensible English if we are to “move forward” (an approved terminology I am certain) on this issue. And you talk about the relevance of Ukrainian!
