The Winners: MasterChef Australia won the night with 1.934 million viewers. Seven News averaged 1.664 million for second and Nine News was third with 1.574 million. Sunday Night averaged 1.351 million and Bones won 8.30pm for Seven with 1.312 million for 5th nationally. Merlin on Ten at 6.30pm averaged 1.293 million (it’s slowly shedding viewers). 60 Minutes was 7th with 1.261 million and the second episode of Random Acts of Kindness averaged 1.245 million (and lost a lot of viewers from the debut the week before). Rove averaged 1.147 million for Ten at 8.30pm and 8th, just in front of Miss Marple (fairly flat and rather turgid) on the ABC which averaged 1.117 million. Seven’s 8pm program, The Force averaged 1.080 million in 11th and 12th and last in the million viewer list was the US version of Border Security on Seven at 7.30pm with 1.047 million. Castle on Seven at 9.30pm averaged 942,000.

The Losers: CSI, 974,000, beaten by an ordinary Miss Marple on the ABC and by a better Bones on Seven, and a snappier Rove on Ten. That’s another black hole Nine will have to fill. CSI Miami at 9.30pm, 897,000. The program should sink under the weight of its own stupid plots and storylines. It’s as bad as Miami Vice was.

News & CA: Seven News again won nationally but lost Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, but had another big win in Brisbane and Perth. The 7pm ABC News averaged 765,000. Ten News averaged 816,000. SBS News at 6.30pm, 221,000, Dateline, 217,000 at 8.30pm. In the morning Weekend Sunrise, 441,000, Today on Sunday, 273,000. Insiders a high 240,000, Inside Business at 10am, 188,000, Offsiders at 10.30pm, 164,000. Landline at Noon on the ABC, 278,000.

The Stats: Ten won with a 6pm to midnight All People share of 27.5% (27.2% a week ago) from Nine with 25.1% (26.2%), Seven with 25.1% (25.4%), the ABC with 17.9% (16.6%) and SBS with 4.3% (4.6%). Ten also won the key demos, thanks to the success of MasterChef. Ten won Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Nine won Brisbane. In regional areas WIN/NBN won with 27.1%, from Prime/7Qld with 24.2%, Southern Cross (Ten) with 23.4%, the ABC on 20.0% and SBS with 5.3%.

Glenn Dyer’s comments: Seven won All People last week, Ten was second (but scooped the major demos) and Nine was squeezed into third. This week Nine will do better with the State of Origin Rugby League game on Wednesday.

Last night saw the extent of the disaster confronting Nine. Its US crime franchise, CSI is all but shot, beaten by a rather boring version of Miss Marple on the ABC. Ms Marple laboured and lurched its way through 90 minutes.

Seven’s Sunday Night had a clear win in the 6.30pm slot, beating a sinking Merlin on Ten and the second episode of Nine’s Random Act of Kindness that lost 200,000 viewers. Sunday Night also finished with a clear win over 60 Minutes. It was a good solid effort for the program which is being rested by Seven, which returns Dancing With The Stars at 6.30pm from next Sunday week.

TONIGHT: Top Gear on SBS (both a highlight, and a low light). The ABC has Australian Story, The 7.30 Report, simply because Kerry will do a good job on the ute story. Nine has Sea Patrol. Seven has How I Met Your Mother as a low light, perhaps Scrubs and Desperate Housewives as highlights. Ten has the cooks of MasterChef, perhaps Recruits, which is now like all other observational police based programs.
