Former NYT journo Gay Talese recalls the alcohol-fuelled newsrooms of yore, which he claims made the characters on Mad Men look like amateurs.
But did a diet of booze and smokes really make for more creative writers, as many old hacks claim? On the contrary, says Talese, it’s amazing the paper ever got out at all.

Dear Crikey, please don’t spoil my illusions and tell me that the Crikey crew are all abstemious types who neither drink nor smoke.
I’d have to cancel my subscription immediately on the grounds of moral outrage.
Bring back the 4 hour lunch!!! 🙂
You know, life is pretty good without booze…you can afford time and money to read more and subscribe to quality journalism like Crikey…I know what I’d rather spend my money on anyway.
@Michael: where do you think your subscription $ is going?? hahaahha
You know there are a lot more industries that thrived through the 80’s and 90’s with bottles in the drawer and extended lunches and hazey afternoons. Universities are notorious with the subsidised alcohol in the union bars, and mixes of different disciplines always assured lots of colourful and half-witted debate.
*sigh* the good old days…
