Cringe alert. Kevin Rudd and our Will, the Prince of Hearts, saw a hip-hop crew performance at a homeless shelter in Sydney and could not have looked more awkward. Have the homeless not suffered enough?

I don’t think the Prince looks awkard. I’m no monarchist but hey, he smiles at the end with his eyes and his mouth. What’s he supposed to do: bust a move?
I don’t think Wills handled too badly, but what an earth is up with Rudds slow, limp wristed clap?!
There’s a big piece missing from this story – and other media accounts of the rap for Prince William. That being the lyrics the young people were rapping. The reason for the awkward response could have been that the PM was expecting a cutesy performance and instead faced African youth rhyming about the British history in the slave trade, and closer to home, a local MC speaking about the real effects of alcohol and poverty on his community in Southwest Sydney.
Find some of the video coverage that let’s you hear the lyrics and your cringe alert may turn to applause. The young hip-hop artists hail from the Street University, a youth centre opened by Public Enemy and recently visited by Dead Prez. Sorry Prince William and K-Rudd – we don’t build little Kanye West’s out here.
