For several years I was involved with an American woman. She was a Washington State girl, but circumstances found her family living in Georgia, about a kilometre from the border with Alabama.
Let me tell you, dear friends, they do not speak English in Alabama. I wish I was joking when I said my partner (a damned Yankee herself) had to translate for me.
So what does Alabama have in common with the Northern Territory of Australia?
Here in remote Aboriginal Australia the last few bilingual programmes at school, were effectively killed off by a “4 hours English only” policy.
The CEO of the NT Department of Education & Training was recently quoted as stating:
“We want people to speak their home language for the first four hours but we want it predominantly done in English.”
I fervently hope he was misquoted, but I fear not.
Clearly doesn’t understand public safety…can’t comment on the vid on youtube…so much for a republican dialogue…(or dialog – as they’d spell in the US).
That youtube needed subtitles.
