Why do they do it? Why do so many men keep their homosexuality a secret, lying to wives and family, friends and colleagues, living miserable double lives skulking in the closet?
Let’s examine some headlines from the past week (which, incidentally, included Monday’s International Day Against Homophobia):
- Gay marriage an ‘insidious’ threat to society: Pope Benedict XVI (The Australian, May 14)
- Politician against gay marriage (In My Community, May 18)
- Footy Show implied gay people are faulty, tribunal told (ABC News Online, May 19)

As NSW Premier Kristina Keneally this morning, with sensitivity and acuity, described the dilemma of her now-former transport minister David Campbell: “It is appalling that he lived a lie, and it is appalling that he lives in a society [in which] he feels he has to live a lie.”
” keep their homosexuality a secret, lying to wives ” – I would have thought the answer to that is pretty obvious; and it has nothing to do with homophobia. Even in this fairly promiscuous age, few wives would be willing to share their husbands with another – male or female. Adultery is still just that.
Quote: As NSW Premier Kristina Keneally this morning, with sensitivity and acuity, described the dilemma of her now-former transport minister David Campbell: “It is appalling that he lived a lie, and it is appalling that he lives in a society [in which] he feels he has to live a lie.”
She could well have added: “However, it’s even more appalling that the taxpayers of NSW have to put up with the bad joke disguised as a government that I temporarily lead. Thankfully, that appalling circumstance will be unceremoniously terminated by in March next year.”
@SOCRATEASE…and just what has your second para got to do with this blog, apart from you making it another avenue to have a go. Stick to the story, there are plenty of other avenues open for your personal political rants.
When it comes to Adam Walters, the word “scumbag” comes to mind. And if I can add to Kristina Keneally’s comment: (“It is appalling that he lived a lie, and it is appalling that he lives in a society [in which] he feels he has to live a lie.”) “and it is a pity that we don’t respect a person’s privacy”
Public Interest!
Im gay, and the reason I decided to tell my loved ones when i was 23 was because I felt it would be best in the long run for myself and for anyone else who cared to know, to know. Its no one’s business this is true.
However, like it or not, this man is a public figure, and if he has not the discretion to keep it in his pants and goes cruising for sex with strangers I think he really should be criticised. Professionally as a politician it is very important he can prove he is an honest man – this to me seems like another unfortunate bungle by this man. I really feel sorry for him, but then I think its important that people realise he did make this mess for himself.
The reporters are pretty discgraceful though, but what else could you expect…!
