Quote of the day:
“This election will determine whether the prime minister is to be elected by the people or by the power-brokers. Whether prime ministers are to be chosen on the basis of the job they’ve done, or gender.”
— Opposition leader Tony Abbott plays that card, in his closing argument during last night’s one and only leaders debate for this campaign. Channel Nine’s worm called it for Gillard, but most pundits this morning are arguing the largely lackluster debate was too close to call. Of course, there is the distinct possibility that they fell asleep…
i will be up front, im voting labor and was hoping that julia gillard would win the debate
in my opinion she did, and the reason for it was in her final speech about the issues etc before the debate ended
tony abbots reply was so poor it astounds me how the so called pundits could even suggest that he came close to a draw
any fair minded person could see that julia gillard at least stands for something
and that tony abbott is just another right wing ideologue hack trying to scare voters with his refererences to stopping the boats etc etc
take note tony abbott prime ministers are elected by the people, john howard was, kevin rudd was and so was julia gillard
they were elected by people in there electorates to represent the party they stood for
they were then elected by there parties which all have factions as the leaders of there parties, therefore they become pm
if the liberals would have won the last election, there would have been a new liberal pm, because john howard was defeated in his seat of benelong
the say applies if labor wins a majority of seats in the house of reps this election and julia gillard loses her seat in parliament
Julia can confidently stand on her record of :-
achievable paid parental leave,
school teachers, apprentice initiatives, 225,000 computers so far (with some inevitable and understandable delay)
24000 school halls with only 240 complaints of which 100 already fixed,
IR reform: getting rid of workchoices, unfair dismissal restraints, modernising awards.
getting rid of the Harradine refusal to fund family clinics overseas,
Australia signed Optional Protocol on UN Convention on Elimination of Discrimination against Women
National Disability Strategy includes a $11 million accessibility package in the budget
Removed discrimination in legal matters against homosexuals
Increased university places for numbers of doctors
Simplified tax reporting for small business
Established Infrastructure Australia and a huge number of other initiatives
