After their abysmal showing and amateurish National campaign theVictorian Division of the Australian Democrats will discuss their existence tonight. Up for debate , whether to stand alone, rename, merge with another party or disband. The latter option is the more favoured.
Unpaid GST bigger than Hoges. The Australian Tax Office wants to pursue Paul Hogan for unpaid taxes. Why is it that the ATO has not pursued the $250 million-plus estimated GST that has not been paid by insulation installers under the home insulation program? The ATO had departmental officers seconded to the program and were fully aware that there was circa $250 million unpaid GST as a result. Maybe the ATO should simply ask for the rebate payments records made by the Department of Environment, Heritage, Water and the Arts to insulation installers and collect on the $250 million-plus of unpaid GST. The Senate Committee should be asking questions of the Australian Tax Commissioner (who had full knowledge of the unpaid GST) and deployed ATO officers to the home insulation program.
The bosses wife dances away. Lots of people in Sydney’s eastern suburbs were buzzing with the sighting of Skye Leckie in the crowd watching the final of Seven’s Dancing With The Stars last night. She is of course wife of Seven boss David Leckie. Didn’t know she could tell a two-step from a tango…
No entry, but enjoy the party. Questions were asked at Fairfax after the Sydney Morning Herald won the Newspaper of the Year Award. The Age‘s cost-cutter David Skelton, seen by journalists as leading the charge to sack staff, slashing and burning editorial resources, flew to Sydney at great expense for the big announcement knowing that The Age could not win after forgetting to submit an entry.
Newspaper free-for-all (we’ve lost count): In one (daily) newspaper town Perth, The West Australian can be had for free by wandering into the cafe forecourt of the WA Museum in Northbridge.
…and more: I was at the National Gallery of Victoria on St Kilda Road in Melbourne last weekend to see the European Masters Exhibition. On the way out there was a pile of Saturday Age newspapers, each in a heavyweight brown carry bag with a sign proclaiming that the price of the Age was ‘included in the exhibition entry fee’.
