Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho, it’s off to work we go. It’s not all happy faces on the money-making front these days with Walt Disney Australia. Movies aren’t making what they used to and there is major reshuffling that will see the once mega group combining Home Entertainment and Theatrical — which means the redundancy list is looming.

In fact, the chop has already begun under a cloak and dagger style revamp. And with new head honcho, appointed earlier this year, about to name the three new heads of the newly formed three divisions of Disney in a few weeks, a few who thought they were up for the job have been well and truly snubbed. Word is the corporate restructuring has more than a few noses out of joint.

Virgin computers problems: no hacking, just hacks. Your writer from the grassy knoll in regards to Virgin Blue’s booking engine shutdown is way, way off the mark. I work there, in IT; I won’t say more than that. There is no credit card fraud or hack attempt. It is purely incompetence and lack of proper planning on the part of Navitaire. This has caused DJ management to declare a change freeze in all IT environments until everything is properly back in operation and impacts of changes are assessed correctly. And bookings are back in operation. Also, bookings are done in the Navitaire system.

Recycling environmental policy. Recently I had a conversation with a manager from a small regional council. The conversation turned to recycling and he told me their program had cost ratepayers $3.5 million over the last 10 years. He suggested they could have buried this recyclable material for $100,000, before pointing out that none of the material is processed locally. So about 80 tonnes every month is driven around 500km. It’s another thing that makes me feel very pessimistic about how Australia is going to overcome climate change.
