Don’t know what’s eerie about this song. Herborg Kråkevik was sad and mournful. It’s a famous poem called ‘To the Young’ (Til Ungdommen) and was written by poet Nordahl Grieg in 1936 and who died over Germany fighting the Nazis towards the end of WW2, in the company of Australians, as it happened.
I recall this poem from school. In those days we were read poems and pleas from around the world. The plan was to inculcate children with a horror of war. How times have changed.
Here’s Norway’s famous Kim Larsen singing the song. His version wouldn’t have been suitable at the Rose March. The title ‘Kringsat af fjender’ is the first line of the poem – ‘surrounded by enemies’. It’s worth a look.
