If there was any doubt that the events of September 11, 2001, continue to cast a shadow over the American psyche, just take a look at front pages across the US:

As Guy Rundle wrote of the fading world power in Friday’s Crikey: “Ultimately in trying to overcome the forces that created 9/11, it has been in thrall to them, and to the event itself, honouring it by failing to move beyond.”
As for the memorials, the moments of silence, the lest we forget, there is no need: “… the burning tower and the second plane have been printed by heat on our retinae, never out of the mind’s eye, 10 years old, and right now, ever afresh.”
Hardly surprising, it was the 21st century version of Pearl Harbour.
The Pearl Harbour anniversary ceremonies in 1951 were no doubt as strong them as 2011’s 9/11 ceremonies are today.
Ten years is a short time when you are dealing with a seminal event such as the terrorist atrocities on September 11 and the aftermath.
On 10th September I took time to ponder the unconscionable and out of all proportion retaliatory strikes by the USA.
It should surprise no-one, especially the USA, that they remain a prime target for such attacks.
Americans have not moved on because they know in their hearts that US foreign policy got it all wrong on al Qaeda. Michael Scheuer is probably right.
