Bolt happy to have a Good Weekend. Good Weekend scribe and all-round nice guy John van Tiggelen met with Andrew Bolt at Channel 10’s Melbourne offices yesterday arvo to gather quotes and background for van Tiggelen’s eagerly awaited profile piece. Bolt has decided to co-operate with Fairfax, in stark contrast to Anne Summers’ Monthly piece that hits newsstands today.

Who steps up as mental health commissioner? Who’s the “Victorian big-wig” set to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of David Cappo on the Mental Health Commission, as our friend @CanberraInsider speculated yesterday? Already a busy man”, apparently.

Soldiers brawl on Moresby visit. Some servicemen may have some questions to answer after an incident in PNG this week. Our holidaying local reports: “Thirty or so ADF men pissed as parrots in the bar at the Ela Beach Hotel  in Port Moresby on Monday. Decided a bit of a brawl among themselves might be in order. On for young and old, tables and chairs flying, meals and glasses flying all over the place, patrons petrified, etc. Probably been up here for the Rudd visit. Wonderful PR for Australia and the ADF.”

Abbott to Angry: go for the hippie vote. Angry Anderson is making national headlines for his possible tilt at federal politics in Page. But these comments yesterday — mused to The Northern Star in the Northern Rivers of NSW — didn’t get much play. We thought they were worth repeating:

“He said to me, ‘What about Page? You wouldn’t mind living up there would you?’, and I said ‘Sure, I’d love it’.

“He reckoned I’d be right at home up there with all those pot-smoking hippies, but that’s just his sense of humour.

“I guess it was a bit of a passing joke; I haven’t spoken to Tony for a while, but I don’t think he would mind me telling you.

“He said, ‘If we can’t snare you for the Libs, there’s a few seats the executive might take under consideration’.”
