The Glenn Dyer breakdown: Nine started Alcatraz with the pilot and then the first episode of the series at 8.30pm and 9.30pm respectively: they did moderately well (1.133 million and 1.036 million). Nine also used up two fresh episodes of The Big Bang Theory: the first got 1.347 million, the second, 1.491 million. Good figures. Nine’s audience was up, I assume there were smiles all around at the network this morning.

However, Seven is wearing the winner’s grin: My Kitchen Rules averaged 1.673 million from 7.30pm and then debutante Revenge blew everything out of the water with a metro average of 2.067 million (and over 2.8 million nationally). So Nine was well beaten on a night the network probably thought it would win, or go very close. It was not in the hunt.

The figures for Revenge show that female viewers watched it in their hundreds of thousands, across the ages. Male viewers preferred The Big Bang Theory: they were in the minority.

My Kitchen Rules featured the highest ever contestant score last night of 95. Hard to top that in the rest of the series.

Tonight: Foreign Correspondent visits Bavaria in Germany. Genius, also on the ABC, at 9.30 is worth a look on its debut. Seven has My Kitchen Rules and then the return of Packed to the Rafters. Ten has NCIS returning. Nine has Two and A Half Men returning at 8.30. Nine’s Two Broke Girls at 8 o’clock has been heavily promoted. The ODI cricket between India and Sri Lanka from Adelaide is on Gem.
